Barn Hill Rocks

For anyone who drives along that stretch of the B3357 in the direction of Tavistock from Merrivale Bridge, it is difficult not to notice the rock outcrops on the east side of Barn Hill to the left of the road just below the main Pork Hill car park. Despite their prominence on the hillside here Eric Hemery (p1010) gives scant reference to the tor remnant instead referring to 'small weathered rock outcrops' that are generally more akin to the higher part of the hill where some interesting close jointing occurs in the granite.

The main part of Barn Hill Rocks is actually tucked down on the east side where an impressive overhanging rock with considerable granite is strewn across the slopes above what is known as The Blacksmith's Shop, a now ruined workplace that retains one of Dartmoor's most memorable granite artefacts, a perfectly rounded millstone with central well that is known locally as the Wheelwrights Stone.

Although Hemery mentions this relic he somehow fails to acknowledge the fine pile above. It is a curious oversight in what is such a popular area of the moor, one that is so readily reached from a number of nearby parking places.
